If you get the yellow "soft key" labels, then the kernel is able to
initialize the STI on the graphics adapter.
Interrupt the boot & use the "path" command to check the console path.
With USB kbd connected, it should be "graphics_0", IIRC. Also, boot with
USB kbd connected and watch the LCD display. It will display where the
console is being directed just prior to booting the kernel.
Try starting the X server: /usr/bin/X11/X. What errors/output do you
get?
