Some good suggestions in the posts. One other thing to check that
recently bit me is verify permissions on /etc/nsswitch.conf and
/etc/resolv.conf are set to 444. Your problem description sounds
like it could be a name resolution problem (in addition to automounted
home directories, etc). Assuming it is, if root can resolve the
addresses and the other normal users can't, then it might be that normal
users can't read /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/nsswitch.conf.
