Hello.
I have problems booting HP-UX 10.20 (disk part no. B3782-10101,
from July 1996) on a HP 9000 C180 workstation. The machine has
the latest firmware on it (rev. 6.1, I have not tried 6.2 from
openpa.net as I prefer stay with the supported release if the
core LAN does not hang the machine during reboot and shutdowns).
I am using an old HP CD-ROM drive (model C2944A) on it. This
CD-ROM drive worked on my old C110 workstation, that machine
is now dead.
These are the steps I follow to boot HP-UX on the C180 workstation:
----------------------------------------------------------
Main Menu: Enter command > search
Searching for potential boot device(s)...
This may take several minutes.
To discontinue search, press any key (termination may not be immediate).

I will highly appreciate any feedback on this issue.
- is it a CD-ROM drive related problem? Perhaps this drive will not
work on the C180 workstation. The C2944A drive is an external one,
it is connected to the Single Ended SCSI port and properly
terminated. I have replaced the terminator (A1658-62016 REV-B)
with a more recent one. I will try replacing the cable between
the CD-ROM drive and the computer, if I find another one.
- is it an OS release problem? The OS media should be supported
on C-class workstations but I want to ask. It was the OS media
I was using on the C110 workstation.
- perhaps a media problem? Is the OS media damaged?
Just a thought, the system does not boot now from the hard disk drives.
It has not valid filesystems on it. Should I format the disk drives
before proceeding with the OS installation? If it is not possible
from the PDC I can try connecting the drives to a PC with an Adaptec HBA.
I recall I have an AHA-2940UW HBA, not sure about FWD hardware...
again, I think that it is a media or CD-ROM drive related problem, but
I want to provide as information as possible on this issue.
This is a brief machine description:

I do not know if this information will be useful. PDT and PIM do not
provide useful information about this problem... by the way, I have
pressed the TOC switch in the rear of the computer too.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Cheers,
Igor.
