I am not working with HP-UX 11i (yet), but I think I can help you.
First of all, the output of du(1) can be useful. Try something like:
$ cd /var
$ du -ks *
My *guess* is that there are a lot of core dumps of the system at
/var/adm/crash (this directory exists in 11i too, am I wrong?) :-)
/var/mail and /var/spool are directories that sometimes grow a lot
(email stored, temporary files for plotters... it depends on the
computing environment).
You must decide what files can be removed from the system or stored
in back-up media.
Hope this will help you. But perhaps someone with a better knowledge
on 11i has another tips.
