Action Required
The desktop messaging system could not be started.
To correct the problem:
1. Choose [OK] to return to the login screen.
2. Select Failsafe Session from the login screen's option menu and log
in.
3. Check to see that the desktop is properly installed, the hostname is
correct (/etc/hosts) and that the network is properly configured.
Where should I look next?
You have already been pointed to dr_dt.
From my experiences, CDE is especially picky concerning hostname lookups. The forward (hostname -> IP) and backwards (IP -> hostname) on and for both the workstation and the PC have to give matching results. (I think, dr_dt does a good check on this)
If ~/.dt/errrorlog and/or ~/.dt/startlog (with reasonable dates) exist for the user you tried to log in as, have a look at them.
Look at:
- /var/dt/Xerrors
- /var/X11/Xserver/logs/X0.log
If you have errors in your login-script (.profile, ...) CDE logs you out immediately. (But your symptoms look different)
