Where should I look next?

You have already been pointed to dr_dt.
From my experiences, CDE is especially picky concerning hostname lookups.
The forward (hostname -> IP) and backwards (IP -> hostname) on and for both the workstation and the PC have to give matching results. (I think, dr_dt does a good check on this)

If ~/.dt/errrorlog and/or ~/.dt/startlog (with reasonable dates) exist for the user you tried to log in as, have a look at them.

Look at:
- /var/dt/Xerrors
- /var/X11/Xserver/logs/X0.log

If you have errors in your login-script (.profile, ...) CDE logs you out immediately. (But your symptoms look different)
