cyrillic locale and keyboard

Hi,
ran into a problem: well-known "keymap_ed -i 1101" keyboard switching
enable method seems to use obsolete "modmap" technology, and thus does
not work with gtk software, including firefox.
I tried compiling xkb-compliant keyboard switcher, xxkb, but it says
there is wrong xkb version on the X server.
Any hints?
