Routing Problems

The IT people on my campus upgraded the routers and my SGI have since
stopped communicating with the world. I can communicate with other
nearby computers, but nslookup fails on everything, and I can't see
outside my subnet. PCs and Linux boxes hooked up to my network switch
are fine, and I have tried plugging the SGIs directly into the network
port to eliminate a bad cable, or screwy network switch as the culprit.

I don't understand the relationship between gated and routed. It looks
as though gated can replace routed, but Im not sure which I should use.

I have a file named /etc/config/static-route.options that has the
following in it

$ROUTE $QUIET add default 128.114.141.240 -interface

This worked fine for years until they upgraded the routers this last
weekend (the router address has not changed from 128.114.141.240). Now I
can't resolve hostnames, and I get these messages in my SYSLOG

Aug 25 15:11:23 3D:gizmo nsd[189]: dns_query: failed final sendto
128.114.129.33: Host is down

Should I run either routed or gated or both (via chkconfig)? Which is
reading static-route.options? I have read the man pages on gated, but I
am wondering why I should switch and how this router change could have
affected my routed daemon.

There was some talk of a change in subnet mask to open up the address
space on campus with the router change, something also to do with WXP
machines; from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0. I presume, in hex, this
is a change from 0xffffff00 to 0xfffffe00. I tried changing this via the
admin GUI in IRIX, but that did not resolve my problem.

I am running IRIX 6.5.24m on my machines (2 Octanes, a O2, and a O300).
They all act identical: no communication with the outside world after
the upgrade. All other OSs in my computing group are unaffected
(Windows, Linux, OS X).

Any suggestions on how to diagnose or resolve this issue would be
greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Albion
