I bothered to do that, a very long time ago and in a really horribly
hacked together manner (it was a personal project to learn more about
device drivers and whatnot). It did work, however; but it suffered
from a variety of issues stemming from not being able to make an XFS
filesystem on the thing. Worked fine with EFS as I recall, and you
could certainly dd an XFS partition off a hard disk onto it and then
mount it. I sort of lost interest after that and set it aside, never
to poke at it again. As many people have pointed out time and time
again it's generally a useless device to have, unless you have some
very specialized application reqiring a volatile filesystem or some
other such rare beast. Nobody ever said "Hey, I could totally use
an IRIX ramdisk!" so I just abandoned development of the thing.
