I've scoured the net for hours trying to solve this problem with my O2:
    1) I don't have the root password 2) there is no "Stop for maintenance"
option at startup. The screen is completely black until I reach the
    login screen, which says:

    Welcome to file2
    IRIX 6.5
    Login:
    Password:

I tried a couple of different monitors to eliminate the possible of an
unsupported mode, but this is not the problem. Any ideas on how to
    recover the system? I have the 6.5 install & overlay cd's, but I can't
    boot off them.
