Well put* -- since i am the O.P. guess i'd better help refocus
on the info i'm seeking with *MY* threads actual query.??.

First,, like to say THANKS to all that have responded thus far
that made the easier,, understandable comparisons~ comments.

But what my query really aims at is to find out if IRIX.x..xx?
Is a genuine "Mac-like point/clik GUI" W/O need for COMMAND LINE entry??
Any person with half a brain --can immediately start working a Mac
simply because of it's interface --and NON-command line desktop.

Right away -- i should have stated that i have never even used OS X
in the UNIX form or ANY of the versions what-so-ever*.
I have used everything through OS 9.2.2 going back to OS 1.0 on a 512Ke.
Please! ---- do not respond to this thread with TONS more nonsense
about UNIX Shells.. Command line data.. scripting.. crap add-infinitum.!
Start another thread if you so desire --that is not what this one includes.
Thanks*

Back to the target query, the other part of which concerns
which software applications are most advantageous(the best?)
for all of the MAJOR MULTIMEDIA CONTENT RENDERING.?

I am a multimedia producer using Photoshop/Illustrator(of course)
to using video apps such as Adobe Premier - Strada VideoShop 3D*
..Apples very own Quicktime Pro Movie editor ( and many others)

In 3D apps - I use everything from Bryce 3D vs 5.0 ,, Cinima 4D
Strada Studio Pro 3D,, Strada 3D.. etc.,. Amorphium,,others etc.
What apps/(PROGRAMS for the NON-Mac people) of the same types
as these are used with an SGI -- which are most desirable for RAY TRACE,etc.
In a nutschell- i want the BEST info people in this NG have to offer*
 - - -

Thanks to those that took the time & energy to sort answers
about the SGI systems/hardware and pointers made to a blind newbie.
>From what i have ascertained(correct me if need be?) the best
machine.. bang-for-the-buck / current/updated/still viable render machine
appears to favor the OCTANES over all the rest-lest one has lots of money??

I see an Octane garners the SVGA-RCA Video ports in/out same as
a Mac A/V series 7500/8500 etc. -- and sport SCSI interfaces.
They have the same RAM multiples..etc.
*Question? -- is the RAM the same as used in say a Mac 7500/8500.?
Is the RAM interchangeable.? (not asking about VRAM)

Also want to know if the SCSI drives on the SGI's are 50-pin regular
(of the centronics type,,common, etc) --or is the SCSI of the 50-microscsi
..68-pin..80-pin?. .are the drives interchangeable with SCSI Mac drives.
(yes .. i am aware of driver issues -- it's the SCSI-1/2/3 issue here)
Any help in this area is appreciated too.

Lastly, ... Does an SGI Octane have the capability to run OS's
other than the native IRIX OS versions.. Can it run a Mac OS like 9.2
or even OS X (whichever Unix version?).

Thanks too Everyone with some BASIC info to give*
