My Solaris desktop has the following basic applications:
BROWSERS:
- Netscape 7.0 (from Sun): Runs without problems, hardly ever
crashes, installation is a snap with pkgadd.
- Mozilla (currently 1.4 from Blastwave): pkg-get installed it
without problems, fetching a few more recent libraries than
I have installed in /opt/sfw. Runs OK, will probably replace
Netscape in a few weeks as it seems Sun isn't going to produce
a new version of Netscape.
EMAIL/NEWS:
- Sylpheed 0.9.2, locally compiled from CVS. Handles huge mailboxes
with ease. Mail is fetched from the local qmail MTA using POP3
and stored locally. The largest mailbox I'm aware of is about
500MB, but it's MH style (one file per message). It takes about
2 seconds to open on a U60/2360.
OFFICE AUTOMATION:
- StarOffice 6.0: Installation is a snap, it runs OK, and has
reasonable compatibility with Word documents.
- StarOffice 6.1beta2: Overall much better, especially importing
from and exporting to Word. Co-exists happily with SO 6.0.
The Linux desktops use the same applications. The Windows desktops
currently use Pegasus for mail, and Netscape for news; I'm looking
at Sylpheed for Windows, which is getting pretty good. Once I
have all systems using the same software, I'll start thinking
about replacing Netscape/Mozilla with a lighter, browser-only
variant.
Take care,
