cde stops root login

I must have done something, somewhere along the line, so that I can not
log into a SS20-Solaris 8 system as the root user. I do have another
user id that is set to user number 0 so effectively I do have root user
access, and it works just fine. Also, I can su to root without any
problems. What happens is from the login screen, I put in the username
of root, it's password, and the system then runs some stuff, changes the
screen a couple of times like it's going to log me in but at the point
where the screen should change to the actual cde screen, I'm instead
presented with the login screen again. I am on the console and the
problem is only on the root user id. All other logins work just fine.

I ususally admin this system via telnet then su to do the work I need
but I wanted to do some updates and that was when I found I couldn't get
in as the user root. Any suggestions on what I might have screwed up?
