It sounds as if you need to set the correct terminal emulation type on
your terminal program. VT100 should be sufficient. When the Solaris
installer asks you for the emulator type using "PC Console" has worked
for me (though it always shifts things by one line not a big problem
so I've never looked into a resolution).
