Is this forever or short term?

Did you disable or restart nscd on the client?

either what? do you mean the slave and the master or the slave and the
client?

Does 'ypmatch <user> passwd' match on the client?

If not, what does 'ypwhich' return on the client? The same slave?

Can you bind the client explicitly to the master or to another slave and
see the behavior change immediately?
