    Is the slave by any chance bound to the master and not to itself?
    If this is the case, it would explain what you describe.
    Try updating the map by hand:
    /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/ypxfr -f passwd.byname
    /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/ypxfr -f passwd.byuid
