D2 vs. 3310, D2 on its way out?

Am seeking pro-and-con facts, miscellaneous advice, etc.,
regarding D2 arrays versus 3310 (JBOD) arrays,
in planning a V250-based system purchase.
(Have read all previous D2 and 3310 postings here.)
Department has the money and the intention to hang two 12-disk,
36-GB-per-disk arrays off the V250, and to mirror
each disk of the first array to a disk on the second array
(on a different SCSI host adapter card),
using the native Solaris 8 disk suite software.
Have no interest in, nor budget for using hardware RAID.
Though originally intending to go with two D2 arrays,
one vendor has proposed 3310 arrays in their JBOD
configuration. Pricewise there is apparently little difference
between D2 and 3310, if the 3310s are configured as JBOD.
I've read through the installation manuals for both.
The D2 seems somewhat less complex to deal with than the 3310.
And "somewhere" I read that the 3310 was not built by Sun.
These factors would tilt me toward the 3310.
But one vendor opined that the D2 was "on its way out".
That sounded odd to me -- D2s having been
first-shipped in January, 2002.
Would be delighted to hear from anyone running either of these,
and will summarize.
Thanks,
Steve
