Is this the CD drive that came with that Enterprise2? or did you add it?
I have read that the Ultras don't have the 512byte sector "problem"? Is it
possible that the CD drive is faulty or dirty?
I did have a similar problem with an old Sony CD drive in a 411 box on a
Sparc-1 (now we're really travelling back in time?). In my case, I opened
up the case of the CD drive and it was full of dust bunnies! I cleaned it
out with isopropyl alcohol on Q-tips and it worked fine after that. This
is highly unlikely your problem, but who knows where that CD drive was?
BTW, what originally confused me, was when I did the:
ok> probe-scsi-all
the CD drive reported correctly! Later I realized that was because it is
really just reporting from firmware, and was not reading the actual media.
I cannot think of any OBP diagnostic command that would check CD reading.
Does anyone else know of any? Probably booting is the test?
Do you have any other (Sun bootable) SCSI CD drive available? to borrow?
Any other Sun bootable media? (in case your disk 1 of 2 is bad?) Your burn?
If you're really, really having trouble with the CD drive, you did say you
had a SparcServer? Could you set it up as a jumpstart server? I was
hesitant until I setup my own. It is pretty quick and easy, just RTFM.
p.s. I also love those Ultra2s! (and Sparc20s). Can't afford better (yet).
