It should have been quite clear that Scott was referring to reads of
filesystems.

There is no requirement whatever for zeroing data blocks. I have
formatted drives which previously contained Tru64, various BSDs and Linux
and installed Solaris which ran with no problems at all.
Your experience with Linux is irrelevant WRT Solaris.

If you wish to waste time and energy then help yourself. That is not
required.
