Depends on how munged the patchtree is...

Backup essential data and try an "upgrade" from the
matching OS release boot CD

Example - You have Solaris 9 mu7 installed : >

Boot from a Solaris 9 mu7 CD
If you get to the point where it says
This machine is upgradeable (not exact quote)
Proceed
Upgrade attempts to remove previously applied patches
- all of them - to a base install level.

This is a good place to be : >

Then you can apply whatever afterwards.

Again if things are REALLY munged the upgrade may
possibly fail... So you backup first
