    Thanks for your help. I haven't tried jet yet; stubborn, and want to
    figure it out the hard way (figuring I'd learn more in the process!).

    I discovered that I needed to make the JS/boot/config server
    (lothlorien) an NIS server. Once I did that, the error msgs about not
    being able to set the locale correctly went away. And, I did get the
    client to read the sysidcfg file.

    Unfortunately, it's not setting the TZ correctly (still says PST8PDT,
    when I'm in NJ!). And, it's still not going into an unattended install
    mode -- firing up the gui to the same point as before.

    The contents of my sysidcfg file are:

    ---
    system_locale=en_US
    timezone=US/Eastern
    terminal=sun-cmd
    timeserver=localhost
    name_service=NIS {domain_name=home \
    name_server=arnor.steven-c-liu.com(192.168.1.100)}
    root_password=XXX
    ---
    I guess I'll need to go back to make sure that I have my sysidcfg file
    properly populated.
    Steve
