Dear Gurus,
I am in the procecss of 'remodelling' my network structure.
It turned out, that the backup and raid server will be a Solaris (SPARC)
machine due to the fact, that I have a SUN A5000 RAID-Box and an the FC
controllers for the SPARCs.
For backup purposes, I have an Exabyte 8mm changer (10 tapes, 1 drive)
which should give me a total of 100 GB Backup space on tape.
What I want is to install only the packages that are absolutely needed
to keep as much as possible overhead away from that machine.
For backup I'd like to use BACULA (don't know yet if this can handle my
Exabyte changer).
The machine will be used to host dataspace for Solaris, Linux and
Windows (Samba) machines. This will only be a DATA - Server. No
applications other than for this purpose will be running on this machine.
Since I am not too much into all the packages Solaris offers, I'd like
to get some help on which packages have to be installed to gove me best
performance (throughput).
So the questions are :
- which version of Solaris should I use
- can this be done by installing i.e. the server version and then
remove packages I don't need ? Or is it better to selet the
packages I need when installing Solaris (which ones) ?
- is it better to use a PCI based system or a SBus based one ?
(my guess would be PCI since it runs faster than SBus, but I could
be wrong here)
- I have the following options for this server :
1.) SBus based U2 (512 MB, 300 MHz) - sufficient ?
2.) PCI (32-bit) based AXi, (512 MB, 400/440 MHz)
3.) PCI (32-bit) based AX1105 (like Blade 100, 1.25 GB, 500 MHz)
Which one of these would be the best to meet my needs ?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks a lot in advance
Matthias
