Cannot boot into single user mode.

Hi all.

I have a 2 Sun Netra240s in a cluster. I need to install some patches
so I'm trying to boot them both into single user mode without the
cluster (boot -srx). Problem is: one of them gets to a certain point
then just starts spitting out gibberish to the screen and locks up. The
gibberish looks a lot like the baud rate is set wrong, but it's
not(there's a capture below). I can't even break out to the OK prompt.
I have to power it down then back up. It will boot normally just fine,
but the single user thing just ain't happening. Has anyone seen this?
Could it be a hardware issue?

Thanks,
Ben..

Here's the capture:
