Thats really the only way*. Apps shouldn't care what version of the OS
they're installing on (apart from somr minimum supported version),
unless they mess with the kernel or undocumented interfaces (in the latter
case, they are arguably broken).
* I guess you could write your own version of uname that returns whatever
you want...
