What are you folks using for magnetic tape
backup these days???
Depends. avoids DDS. VXA-2 is a nice replacement, not too fast (6MB/s) so
you can backup thru the network easily. If you want big and fast, go for
LTO2/3, but you'll have to use big fast drives (LTO-3 : 65MB/s).
I use DAT and am very happy with it. My current model is a Sony SDT9000,
DDS3. I bought this one new about a year ago and have it in my SunFire
280R. It isn't what currently gets called high volume, at only 12/24 GB
per tape, but that is plenty for my needs.
Also consider the cost per GB of media when looking at the cost of the
drive. My tape rotation requires sixteen DDS3 tapes. With my previous
DDS2 drive I needed close to thirty to achieve the same thing. With a
bigger media size I could bring this down to ten tapes.
I don't know if DDS-5 is much better (I suspect not), but I've owned DDS-2 and DDS-4 drives (a couple of each) and the speed is sloooow. That rather makes them impractical for high volume, which the original poster wanted.
I've got a couple of DDS-4 drives, and despite both being made by different manufacturers (HP and Sony), and both on different SCSI controller cards, they are pretty slow.
A DLT8000 is significantly quicker and other technologies are even faster.
