Re: Need to format a new 18.6 GB Sun Ultra 30 hard drive

Okay... for all of you who are so nice to help me, your knowing
Solaris-specific administration tips so much better than I do, I would
like to ask another question or two.

My Sun Ultra 30, with two network interface cards, is my router and
mail host. My Linux system has the Cyclades 16-serial-port card attached
to it, and it's the system that is really used a lot by my mother and I.

(So, when the Sun is down, I don't have Internet access or email, but
my Linux system operates normally otherwise.)

I installed the new 18.6 GB drive in the Sun last Friday night. I
did not actually see it boot (because of monitor problems I had then,
that's another long story), but I now have a working monitor on the Sun.
The Sun and Linux are both operating 100% normally, from everything I can
determine.

I was thinking, in line of the recommendations to format the drive,
and not follow the installation formatting, and to format it myself, and
allocate 4 GB or more to /, 2 GB to swap (though at the moment I have only
128 MB of memory), and the rest to /export/home. (This seems fine, to
me.)

I was thinking it would be good if I could format it while it was
running. I want to see whether the drive is there. (But, one person's
suggestions definitely seemed to be not in the "normally running Solaris",
but in the single user mode.) I, of course, know I would be "shutting it
down" to install Solaris 8 on the new hard drive.

But, here's a question. On page 331 of the Solaris System
Administration Volume 1, it says that in most cases, disks are formatted
by the manufacturer or reseller and do not need to be reformatted when you
install the drive. To determine whether or not a disk is formatted, use
the format utility...

On my Ultra 30, logged in as root, I type:
format

And, it says "Searching for disks...done". Then, under AVAILABLE
DISK SELECTIONS, it only has one disk:

0. c0t0d0 <SUN4.2G cyl 3880 alt 2 hd 16 sec 135>
/pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/sd@0,0

It doesn't know about, at this time, the second drive.

What do you recommend? Boot into single user mode, reboot the Sun,
now that I can actually see everything it outputs during a boot (which I
wasn't able to see, last Friday night)?

Getting help from people who have experience with this, and know it
much better than I, IS helpful! (This has been a new realization to me,
and as I get more time [which I hope to, in another couple months or so],
I intend to spend more time reading Usenet articles, and helping others,
in areas where I am more familiar!) :-)

What suggestions do you have?

Thank you!

Barry
