RANT: Why Sun is losing to Linux

If Sun wants to know why they're losing to Linux here's an good reason
why.
I have a SF3800 with two processor boards, eight 750MHz processors, and
16GB of memory. For some reason CHS identified two banks of 512MB of
memory are bad and have marked them out of service. Thus my total memory
has been reduce from 16,284MB to 15,360MB. In order to recover this
memory I need the "service" mode password. The only way to obtain this
password is directly from Sun...at a cost of $150.00/hr since I don't
have a service contract on this system. This is absolutely
ridiculous...I shouldn't have to pay $150.00/hr in order to re-enable
memory that the system took offline for whatever reason. I can work
around this problem by downgrading the firmware to 5.12.6...which
doesn't appear to find any problem with the memory in question (an
upgrade to version 5.20.1 finds an entire system board to be
problematic). This is foolish...to force me to spend money to use memory
that is fine is absolutely unacceptable. I understand that the service
mode is a special mode which could result in damage to the system. But
there needs to be a non-destructive way to remove components from the
CHS without requiring a sun service contract. Sun...with this stupidity
I am seriously considering moving away from the Sparc platform to x86.
While I may represent an insignificant amount of business to you rest
assured that I am not the only one that feels this way.
Done...rant...Josh
