This kind of thing (high-end hardware ending up as cheap old
HW and being used by individuals etc) is a dilemma for the
manufacturer, I think.

What's the dilemma? This kind of thing should be encouraged.

Well, the fact is that this kind of hardware often needs special
TLC, like you experienced. If, and how to provide the buyers of the
second-had kit with the wherewithal to dispense that TLC is the
dilemma. If the "hobbyist" doesn't "get it" for whatever reason,
there's the risk for bad publicity, like you demonstrated. On the flip
side, the positive publicity one gets from people running old kit is
minimal. Rants about how bad Sun equipment and documentation is are
fairly commonplace. Encomiums about how ten year old kit is still doing
sterling work or the merits of Sunsolve are far less frequent, and
hardly ever influence buying decisions.
