Regarding Solaris 10, I thought it was free but it looks like it is
free when you buy Sun hardware only according to :http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/licensing/overview.xml
I think it's pretty clear:
"Earlier Sun systems or systems from other vendors are eligible for a
free Solaris 10 license after registration of those systems."
Or: you can run S10 on older Sun kit or any other machine after
registering (which is free).
"Systems purchased after 2/01/05 from Sun and Sun authorized channels
are licensed to run any current versions of Solaris (8, 9, or 10,
select one at time of purchase)"
Or: you can run any supported version of Solaris on these machines.
I think the subtext is that you *can't* run 8 or 9 on older systems or
on third-party systems without some other license. You can run 10 on
anything.
