The subject says it all -- I'm interested in hearing
people's opinions on Uninterruptible Power Supplies.

So far, I've had very good luck with APC. Bad luck
with Belkin and CyberPower.

Belkin, at least the one I had, has this peculiarity
that once it's drained, and the main power comes
back, it remains in the "off" position. I would prefer
that it return to "on" so that I don't need to be there
physically to power everything back up. Charge
the battery based on the difference between line
power and the load.

I called up their customer service on this issue,
and they thought I was nuts. I dunno, maybe I am.

One CyberPower unit cooked itself. I still have the
melted plastic case as proof. Another one worked
perfectly for maybe 30 seconds, then drained.
I dunno, maybe two PC-sized machines and network
switch were too much for it.

I'm curious to hear if my experiences are somehow
unique.

I've had pretty good luck with APC Smart-UPS model along with the
network expansion cards for remote management and alerts. We did have
one catch fire, trip the breaker, and cause enough smoke for the fire
department to make our day interesting but APC sent us *two* new units
to replace the one that fried despite it being seven years old and way
out of warrantee. :) Other than that they've been quite reliable.

The Back-UPS stuff is cheaper and it's what everyone buys at first but
it appears to let a lot of dirty power through, is missing most
pro-active management features and behaves badly when the battery goes
south (which it will definitely do in 2-5 years). I've used some of
these at home and at work and they're good enough for desktops and other
low-end needs but I will no longer let them in the server room.
