As has been pointed out many times, people don't even use 90% of the
features of the latest Office. And MS is having a tough time convincing
people to leave Office 2000 or even Office 97 for the latest Offices. Most
people are going, "it's good enough" right now. All Star/OpenOffice have to
do is achieve Office 97 functionality.

It's also getting much easier to leave Microsoft compatibility behind. Most
people these days are sending documents out in PDF format rather than MS
Word format. Even stuff coming from Word are being sent out in PDF.

When Microsoft took over from WordPerfect as the leading wordprocessor
maker, it did it by matching all of the features of WordPerfect 5.2, but not
bothering with WordPerfect 6.0 which was already out. They knew that most
people found WP 5.2 more than adequate. A similar manoeuver can be done
right back to Microsoft.
