If, not when.
I dont know what the profit of the new line of servers is, but
they are pretty much server for the money for me as a customer.

And when is that according to your chrystal sphere ?

I dont think you really understand why people use Solaris today.
First of all, Solaris works extremly well with sparc hardware, mainly
because Sun have the control of both the OS and the hardware.
Also Solaris is built for being used in large critical systems,
many CPU's lots of RAM and still work.. none of the "free"
*IX'es are near that today..
AND, companys that want to throw money on problems until they
disappear *HAVE* to buy stuff from a large company that can fix
all possible problems that will show up.. Today it's more or
less only Sun and IBM that can provide such systems.. They used
to be more of them, like HP,DEC and so on but they are going
down, and most people migrate to Sun/Solaris..
Personally I dont see any real choice when I decide wich kind
of server I should buy at work.. I love IRIX but SGI/MIPS
hardware not cost effective for the kind of work I want to do,
(also I have to admit that IRIX is not either, even if it's a
nice system to work with..) BSD and linux on x86.. well.. the
hardware isn't much cheaper (or in many cases more expensive)
than hardware from sun, and even if it is it usally lacks a
useable consoleport, hotswap on different parts and so on..
If I would choose the x86 hardware anyway I have to run a
free OS and hope that they will support that new card I might
buy next year.. and I really hope that that kernelmodule is
compatible with the one I use for that other card.. (been there
done that..)
I dont want to throw *** on linux, I use it myself on my laptops
and it works very fine with support for alot of hardware, however
I would not choose it on a server that is in production use.
