trouble with eth0

i wonder if my eth0 is damaged...ifup says eth0 is running, ping to
localhost is succesful but ping somewhere else returns just:
ping to host.i.pinged sending 56 bytes...

and does nothing.

Can someone please tell me how I can test ( software ) my eth0 ? I have a
linux PC with a linux Ultra1 connected with a cross-over cable...
