You hook up a null modem to TTYA, and use a serial console. As well
as saving the expense of frame buffers, KVMs and monitors, with a
suitable serial console server, you can get console access to your
machines from anywhere on the network (e.g., from the comfort o
your desk, rather than a cold and noisy machine room).
Newer machines have LOM, which work in a similar way, but I believe
they can use an Ethernet network directly, without a console server.
