I saw pretty much this identical sequence when a Sun tech added a 750
to my machine. It went back to Sun, which I guess either meant the bin
or some "failure mode analysis lab". Given that our postal room opened
the static bag and examined it, I have to simply -hope- that my firm
paid, not Sun (kind of moot with platinum service).

Sun subsequently announced plans to minimise customer installations of
cpus. These things are even more fragile than a Pentium or Athlon it
seems.
