ultra 5 and PGX24 graphics config problem and cpu change

I bought a sun ultra 5 360 mhz a couple of weeks ago and the best video i can
get so far is 8 bit graphics. this ultra had never been used as i peeled
the stickers off the power supply area in back and had a setup screen for
Sol7 when i booted the box.

in my searching the net i find differing opinions as to whether or not any
ultra5s came with 24 bit graphics. the sun ultra5 user manual i found,
said this:

Note: Systems with PGX24 graphics have "PGX24" or "Series 3" printed on
the serial number label this is affixed to the front bezel.

I have "Series 3" on this label. But so far I can only get 8 bit depth in
Solaris 9. (see xdpyinfo below) Chipset onboard has "ATI 3d Rage Pro Turbo
PCI". Is there a configuration setting i am missing in Sol9?

On a sun website there is also a reference as to not being able to use 8
and 24 simultaneously with the PGX24. I only need 24.

Would it be best to just pick up a sun raptor pci card? 20 bucks on ebay,
new

Also, this being a 360mhz 256k cache cpu, would i realize a decent
performance increase with a 333mhz cpu with 2M cache. If i am reading the
documentation right I can swap the cpus.

This box is mostly email, data storage and websurfing and nothing
demanding great processing power.

Here is output of xdpyinfo:
