Hey all,
Ultras are so cheap on eBay I couldn't help myself so I bought an Ultra 5.
Reading about it while I'm awaiting it's arrival, it sounds like I could do
myself a real favor by using a SCSI hard drive instead of the built in IDE
drive (particularly since mine includes a lowly 5400 RPM drive)...
I picked up a Symbios SYM8751SP PCI card to be my SCSI host card, now I need
to pick up a drive... a few questions
(1) Any overall drive recommendations? I see lots of SCA (80 pin) drives
going for real cheap, but I think that's because they won't directly connect
to a lot of SCSI controllers, the SYM8751SP included. Should I stick with a
68 pin SCSI drive?
(2) What kind of termination do I need? One on the internal bus? If I don't
have any external drives connected do I still need a terminator right on
that external connector?
(3) What kind of RPM drive would you recommend for a desktop Ultra 5? Would
a 10,000 RPM drive be loud overkill?
(4) If you know of any online places to pick up cheap SCSI drives, please
share. Direct links are very welcome! Comp Geeks doesn't appear to be
selling SCSI drives at all these days. I Sell Surplus dot com is offering a
Quantum Atlas 9.1 GB
(http://www.isellsurplus.com/product.asp?ID=8175&C=12&S=64) for $34.. that
seems reasonable. Should that work?
(5) PCI Card, 68 pin drive, 68 pin SCSI cable. Is that it, hardware wise?
Thanks so much...
