O.K. No experience with the Ultra-5, but lots with the Ultra-2,
so some will carry over, and some will not.

That sounds reasonable to me. Note that the Ultra-2 won't do
IDE at all (with adaptors on the drives, at least).

The Ultra-2 has the 68-pin SCSI built into the motherboard, so
no help with that.

I've got quite a few SCA drives, (and could use some more). I
can use them in:
1) The Ultra-2 chassis -- sockets for two of the drives built
in.
2) SS-5 and SS-20 -- mounting and termination for two SCA drives
built in.
3) Unipack -- provisions (in some) for mounting a single SCA
drive. (Others are 50-pin or 68-pin.) This has a built in auto
termination which activates when it discovers that it is the end
of the SCSI chain. It will even terminate half of the SCSI
buss, if there are 50-pin devices beyond the unit.
4) Multipack -- provisions for up to 12 1" high SCA drives, but
pre Ultra-SCSI speeds, or up to 6 1.6" high SCA drives, with
those so marked at Ultra-SCSI speeds. Same auto-termination as
above.
5) There are small boards which convert SCA to 68-pin (or to 50-pin)
connections -- though these will probably cost more than the 9.1
GB SCA drives from eBay. :-)
Now -- the 68-pin drive would probably make more sense as an
internal drive in your system, but for all external drives, I
would select the SCA drives, and Muiltpacks for housing them.
>(2) What kind of termination do I need? One on the internal bus?
Not sure with the PCI cards. Suns with built-in SCSI are
normally terminated internally where you don't have to worry
about it -- even back as far as the SS-2 machines.

Not on the ULTRA-2 68-pin (or the earlier machines with 50-pin
built in SCSI, or with sBus SCSI cards). Read up on the PCI card which
you have.
>(3) What kind of RPM drive would you recommend for a desktop Ultra 5? Would

I've got a lot of them -- but I have lots of fans running too.
One more drive would not be noticed.

As you have been already told -- haunt eBay. (Remember to check
the shipping charges, as they can sometimes be more than you pay
for the drives.

Just for comparison -- look at eBay auction #5168333767 Same 9.1
GB size,
$9.95 starting bid,
or
$11.95 "buy now"
plus
Shipping & Handling: $9.95
Note that I have no relationship with this vendor -- this was
simply the first drive to show up on a search for:
"SCA disk drive 9.1GB"
>(5) PCI Card, 68 pin drive, 68 pin SCSI cable. Is that it, hardware wise?
Probably for the first internal drive. (Or how many drives will
this system hold internally? It looks like two IDE drives, based on the
listing of cables in the FEH.
Good Luck,
DoN.
