I should have expanded on why I'm asking about framebuffers. My wife's
Ultra 10 has an Elite 3D-M3. Once in a while, while running Mozilla,
it will just lock up completely. A Stop-A does nothing and it does not
respond to pings. We have to power-cycle(!) it to get it back
running. Nothing gets logged anywhere that I can find when this
happens.
There is nothing peculiar about Mozilla that I'm aware of, and I'm
using the same build on my Ultra 5 at home, and my Sun Blade 1500 at
work. It might just be a coincidence that it has locked up in
Mozilla.
I've redirected the console to ttya, and I've left an xterm running
tip'ped in from my Ultra 5. Maybe if it happens again I'll be able
to use a break to get it down to firmware and take a crash dump, or
maybe it'll display something on a serial console that it can't on
the display when things go wrong. Of course, since I've set this
up, the system hasn't locked up...
It has never locked up when running Mozilla and displaying on my
Ultra 5, so I'm suspicious of things like the framebuffer.
After I posted the original message, I found out that a buddy of
mine has a spare X3670A that he'd let me have for $20, so I might
go that route to try to debug the problem.
BTW Rich -- great book!
