Can't answer specifically about Solaris's tip; I currently use an old
IPX running OpenBSD as my console server (only 'current' OS that runs on
the IPX and supports my Magma 8Sp+2), and hence OpenBSD's tip.
However, I'm assuming they're not too different, in which case it's
mostly a matter of whether tip thinks they're the first two characters
in the line or not.
