Feels like it's your network settings on the machine that causes the faults,
you have good results with an ascii based browser while a gui based has problems.

I would think it could be as simple as that the hostname you set don't have a
valid ip-number, by adding the hostname to the /etc/hosts on the same line as
localhost is (127.0.0.1).
