The new cd didnt work either. Another thing i notice, the network
(http) is fine for the first so much of it's data transfer before it
dies. For example i can access the front page of Webmin remotely
immediately after boot up but anything after that just doesn't
happen. I'd imagine it would be the same with SSH.

Ive made sure my hostname is set, domainname is sert (even though the
machine isn't part of a domain) and the hosts file is correect but
still the same thing.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre problems ive ever seen.
