Dunno about inexpensive, but you might check out www.newfoundtech.com
and their line of serial port expanders. These products used to
be produced by Aurora, who apparently underwent a series of
acquisitions. If newfoundtech doesn't have what you want new, you
might check eBay for "Aurora serial" or some such search.
USB-to-serial and ethernet-serial terminal servers are other
ideas worth pursuing.
