I'm wondering if there are other DVD drives than the Sun branded one that I can install in a U60 and boot from it?
I'd like to know this (what just about to post), although
a) I am looking for a DVD writer b) Booting is not that important for me.
There seems two possible options to me, although either one (or even both) may not work.
1) Add a PCI card with IDE support. Add an IDE DVD drive.
2) Add a internal USB card, then find (do they exist) a DVD drive that works from USB.
One or both may not be possible, especially for booting.
I picked up a used U60 for a pretty good price and really want to get it going. I would like to purchase Solaris 10 from Sun but it only comes on DVD.
You can download CD images - no need to buy. Of course, you need a bit of bandwidth to do it.
Although it is not exactly easy for a first try at Solaris, you can boot from a network too.
