Re: Sun Blade 100 CDROM Drive won't detect burned data CDs?

Hi,

This is a followup to a thread that I had over in comp.unix.solaris...

For the last several days, I've gone through a stack of CD-R blanks,
trying to burn some CDs with files (tars, etc.) on them that can then be
read via the "stock" CD drive on my Sun Blade 100.

I'm sure that the drive is "working" because I can boot Solaris
installation CDs off of the CDROM drive, but when I try to get it to
mount CDs that I've burnt containing files, it seems like it won't even
detect that a CD has been inserted. I don't hear the motor spinning up,
volmgt doesn't see it, and I cannot mount the CD manually.

I'm creating these CDs using mkisofs to make the ISO image file, then
burning with either Nero or cdrecord on a Windows PC or cdrecord on
Solaris 10 X86. None of these CDs are detected or mountable when
inserted into the Blade's internal CD drive.

I finally got around to trying a Sony DVD burner in a USB2 enclosure,
and found that I could mount my burned CDs when they were inserted.

So, I think that at this point, I've resolved the problem down to the
internal CD drive itself, and I was wondering if this is a known problem
with the "stock" CD drives that came with the Blade 100s?

Again, I can boot Solaris from CDROM in the internal CD drive. I can
also mount burned CDs when I burn the Solaris ISOs downloaded from Sun. I just can't mount any data CDs that I've burnt.

I guess I'm ok with having to use the external DVD drive, but I'm
curious about this.

Thanks,
Jim

I had the same problem with several brand new B100s a number of years back. Sun sent replacement CDROM drives (I still have one unopened) but they behaved the same way.

We switched from Sony (or was it TDK?) to Verbatim CDR media and the problem went away.
