The web page specs for the Ultra 40 and 45 say their power supplies are
1000W! That's great if I need to hook up an air conditioner to keep it
cool or use the computer as a toaster oven (okay, just kidding :) but it
suggests the typical power consumption of the base units is pretty high,
too. I thought AMD's "Cool and Quiet" technology was supposed to keep the
power draw down to more reasonable levels.
Anyone know how much power the base models draw? -WBE
Since the u45 is a revamped Blade 2500(probably due to lead free design RoHS) which has a 650 W I would guess in the neighbor of 300 W, then we have all kinds of Graphics adapters and they like power!!
2xUIIIi ~160-180W, memory ~15W disk ~15W misc ~15W and 20% loss in the PSU.
What is the XVR2500? a Nvidia or do Sun still design graphics adapters?
One can wounder when we will see a faster UIIIi, its a pity It did not arrive this quarter(end of fiscal year) now we I have money over ;)

The U45 seems to go a bit beyond a simple revamp of the SB2500. The beast includes 4 drive bays, either SATA or SAS - would imagine that 15K SAS drives would consume a bit of power (if there are such beasts). The RoHS regs were likely the main incentive for the new design - but kudos to Sun for updating as well (PCI Express and PCI-X slots in addition to SATA).
The Sun website says that the new grapics cards are from 3Dlabs, the only one on the 3Dlabs site that supports PCI Express is the Wildcar Realizm 500 and 800 - those look like they can suck up some power. An intriguing feature of both boards is support for LARGE displays - the 500 can handle the 30 inch Apple/Dell monster (as it is, I'm getting really spoiled by the Apple 23 inch monitor with the xvr-600). The 800 can handle a 3.8k by 2.5k LCD monitor.
I'm also disappointed in not having a US-IIIi+ system - put those in the U-45 and I would be ready to buy.
Th eSATA support does bring up one question - when will SATA support be added for older Sparc systems - may mean getting an HBA with Fcode.
