Well ... it may depend on which version of the Ultra-1, but the
one which I have (140 MHz, IIRC) has a small fan mounted over the CPU
package, in the middle of a Plexiglass (or other acrylic) structure to
guide airflow to the various things which need cooling.
Mine died, and the screen would display "Overtemperature --
shutting down" (or something similar), just about the time that I
finished booting from CD-ROM for an install of Solaris 9.
I took it apart, and lubed the fan with instrument oil, but it
did not last too long. So -- I pulled it entirely, measured all of the
dimensions with digital calipers (IIRC, the MM dimensions were more
useful than the inch ones), and dug through my Mouser catalog. I found
two which fit as far as dimensions, voltage and all were concerned. One
was with sintered bronze bearings, and the other with ball bearings. I
opted to spend a bit more for the ball bearing version, and when it
arrived, I installed it, and it has since worked perfectly (so far). I
got two fan assemblies, so I've got one spare for when it goes out next
time.
So -- pull the case open, and power it up. Look for the CPU fan
to spin up. If it doesn't you have the same problem. If it doesn't
*have* a CPU fan, it is a different version of the CPU board (and
probably a different speed), and you will have to look for other problem
sources.
Best of luck,
DoN.
