What is the largest size disk I can fit into an IPX? I think I

I've tried fitting a Western Digital WDE 4360 4.3 GB disk and then
installing Solaris 7 but part way through the install it reports
that the disk is unformatted and/or offline. Configuring the
format.dat parameters manually with the settings listed on the WD
website using the 'type' option to the format utility and then
attempting to format the disk results in more warnings about an
offline disk followed by 'Reserve failed' and the format is aborted.
The 'type' option to the format program allows me to specify disks
as large as SUN 2.9GB so is this the largest disk for this platform?
Andy

I have 4GB IBM disks in a couple running Solaris 7.

But, the root must be under 2GB otherwise the system will not boot!

More correctly, the / needs to be within the first 2G (or 1G) of the
disk. This may become a problem with the new layout where swap are
placed first. A manual layout is probably wise.

I used to run an ss20 with two 18G disks. Worked fine as long as the
root was limited to 2G and placed first on the disk.

You must have had a strange or very ancient OBP in that SS20 .
I got mine out of mothballs this week for a project
df -k says:
/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s0 3530014 2935063 559651 84% /
format:
1. c0t3d0 <SUN4.2G cyl 3880 alt 2 hd 16 sec 135>
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size
0 root wm 0 - 3320 3.42GB
1 swap wu 3321 - 3879 589.57MB

Oh, and even with a larger than 2G root the system will probably boot
immediately after installation, when everything fits within the first
2G. It will fail when the filesystem starts to fill up and kernel
patches has placed stuff beyond the 2G limit. Don't ask me how I
know...

During the project I also ran pca and applied what must have been 100
patches. No problems. IPX - different story.
