No i don't need to turn of the my Ultra10. This is running in 24/7
mode. I need the Ultra to turn on and off other computers. My compile
farm has another Ultra 10, two AMD64, one Intel Pentium4, an Intel
IMac Mini and an G4 IMac Mini. You might agree that letting them all
run during night is a huge waste of energy (and my bedroom is just the
room next to it, so i can hear the machines).
I never found inexpensive hardware that allows me to control this
process and which works with Solaris.
If you need to turn off other unix boxes from your U10 it should be easy.
ssh user@remotehost 'init 5'
or something like that.
Turning them back on relies on what facilities they have.
I could turn my netra T1 on/off with an Ultra 10 (if I had a Ultra 10 that is), but that would be using the capabilities of the T1.
I've basically run a "compile farm" like you with 5 SS20's, SGI Octane, IBM RS/6000, HP C3000, Dec Alpha with an Ultra 80 controlling the lot. But I did not attempt to power machines on (only off) and I did not use RAID.
I think if you lower your expectations a bit you can still achieve a satisfactory outcome with the Ultra 10. But you seem to be asking a lot of an old workstation then moaning when it does not deliver.
