Re: Ultra 40 memory performance

I got an email from someone tonight who had borrowed from Sun an Ultra 40 (two Opteron 280 dual core processors, 16GB of memory, Quadro FX 4500 gfx) with a view to buying some if suitable. They compared it against then HP xw9300 and whilst the CPU performance was about comparable between the machine, the memory performance of the Sun was quite poor.

"What was strange, though, is that the xw9300 had an around 30-35% better memory performance than the Ultra 40. Our software engineers found the same effect also under Linux, so it's probably a problem with the hardware design. Since we have to return the machine we couldn't further investigate the reason, but Sun engineers confirmed that the memory performance is suboptimal on the U40."

Anyone else noticed this, or would dispute it? Anyone compared the Ultra 40 against a Tyan S2895 motherboard which I believe the HP uses?

If that is true, one could connect that to your thread about PSU and RAM problems!

It could then be that they have slowed down the RAM interface due to signal/power issues!

Except that power/RAM issue someone mentioned was I believe on the Ultra 20, not the Ultra 40. (I think it was on the tread about what did a U 40 motherboard look like, but that thread digressed one hell of a lot).

So a new PCB rev. should be in the works...

I'd hope so if the U 40 does have a problem.
