Re: SOHO SUN Server - I'm giving up

The main problem is that SUN never had a silent power saving server or

If there is one (i never tried the Nextra's) i could choose this. But
there isn't. Even for this U5/U10 machines i have to add PC hardware
to make it silent.

The netra T1 is not quite. It is a 1 U server designed for rack mounting.

For me this two are the primary keys. I can switch of a SOHO server
many times. There you don't need high uptimes or scalability or all the
great features of Solaris. You need a silent system in one corner of
the office that you don't notice, not one with a Harley Davidson sound
that adds 400 Euro to your yearly bill and 1000 Euro for the required
UPS to survive a 1 hour power failure (which is the daily routine here
in Thailand).

You might consider what I do which is to mount the UPS (6 kW Compaq) in my garage. We never hear it except when we go in the garage.

Which was quite handy actually, as one day it decided to give up the ghost and "let the smoke out", with sparks flying everywhere. It's on a 32A @ 230 V circuit breaker, which is not the sort of thing you normally have in a house, but easy to fit in a garage. Had it been on a carpeted room, there would have been a significant risk of fire.

Likewise my web server is in the garage and some other other machines have been operating from there too.
